Deciding Where to Stay in Osaka

I recommend having 2-3 days dedicated to exploring the city to see major tourist attractions. In my experience, staying in Osaka is a great place to have your “home” and just do day trips to Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, etc. It’s conveniently located to see many cities and towns in this area of Japan.
Namba/Dotonbori

The heartbeat of Osaka’s entertainment scene, Namba/Dotonbori is a lively district renowned for its dazzling neon lights, bustling streets, and an irresistible array of street food. Staying here immerses you in the heart of Osaka’s vibrant culture, with easy access to the iconic Glico Running Man sign, a plethora of restaurants, lively bars, and vibrant shopping centers.

St. Regis Hotel in Osaka is located in a prime area in the center of the action. This hotel is recommended due to is clean, spacious, and quality customer service. You get great views of the high rise towers and Namba River.

Hotel 88 Shinsaibashi
Slightly on the higher mid-range, this hotel caters to young adults and has everything you need. Full service hotel with laundry, billiards, hang out space, close to nightlife and 24 hour concierge services. Things this hotel has going for it is uniqueness, new, and in a good location.

APA Hotel Nambashinsaibashi
APA hotel chain is the only budget hotel chain that I confidently support. This business hotel is clean, cheap, full amenities, and consistent quality. The price range varies per location and time between 35-110$ with the average of 60$
Umeda (Kita)

Umeda is a great place to stay because transportation around the area and to different areas is easy! There is a lot of food, commercial shopping malls, great hotels, and entertainment district. You can think of this as the financial district of the city center, that is being catered to.
From Osaka Station City and Grand Front Osaka to the famous Umeda Sky Building, this district is a haven for high-end retail therapy and fine dining experiences.

Why Stay in Umeda?
Explore Nearby Cities Easily: Umeda makes it simple to take day trips to nearby places like Himeji, Kobe, Kyoto, and Nara. Trains connect directly, so you can easily hop between cities in the Kansai region.

This was a difficult choice as there are many great hotels such as Hilton and Intercontinental but ultimatly we chose these three for each category:

Conrad is number one due to its luxury spaces and services. Rooms are spacious and staff are said to be friendly. The views from this hotel beat the other out which you can see from its diner, room, gym, and bar/lounge areas.

Hotel Intergate Osaka Umeda
If you’re looking for a truly immersive Osaka experience, Integrate Hotel is the way to go. Right in the heart of the city, allows you to soak up Osaka’s unique culture effortlessly. The rooms are beautifully designed, and the staff’s attention to detail makes for a stay that’s as comfortable as it is culturally enriching.

Hotel New Hankyu
The convenience of being directly connected to Osaka’s major transportation hub is a game-changer, especially when you’re keen on exploring the city efficiently. Guests enjoy the convenience and experience here.
If you’re into shopping and upscale dining, Umeda is the place to be. This area is known for its impressive skyscrapers, department stores like Osaka Station City and Grand Front Osaka, and the famous Umeda Sky Building.
Shinsaibashi

This is my personal favorite area to stay in Osaka. It has many other subway stations and lines to connect it to major attractions such as Osaka Castle, Umeda, Namba, and more. It is about a 10-minute walk to Dotonbori, Amerika mura, and more.
The prices are cheaper here because it is slightly off the main area but by a touch! The restaurants and shopping here are authentic with food and restaurants with locals! Finding good restaurants featuring Japanese, Pizza, Pub, Italian, etc, is easy.
A shopaholic’s dream come true, Shinsaibashi offers a mix of high-end boutiques, quirky shops, and department stores. The covered shopping arcade is a treasure trove for unique fashion finds, and the district’s energetic atmosphere keeps visitors coming back for more.
Top 5 things to do in Shinsaibashi
- Shopping: Shinsaibashi is renowned for its extensive shopping options. The Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade is a long-covered street filled with a mix of local boutiques, international brand stores, and various shops offering fashion, accessories, electronics, and more.
- Explore Dotonbori: Dotonbori is a nearby area that’s synonymous with Osaka’s lively nightlife and iconic neon signs. Take a stroll along the Dotonbori Canal, known for its neon-lit billboards, and try the famous Glico Running Man sign and the Kani Doraku crab sign. It’s a fantastic spot for photos and immersing yourself in the city’s energy.

Hotel Nikko Osaka
Nikko hotel is affordable, yet is the best hotel in the area. It is close to stations, nightlife, great views which you miss with the other two, and is very spacious if you get the double twin room.

BeSpoke Shinsaibashi
I personally stayed here and thought it had cool vibes, very clean and helpful staff. I liked the location since there was local bars, and restaurants. The lounge to food lounge area was great, free breakfast, and it was only a 10-15 min walk to Dotonbori.

APA Hotel Nambakita
APA hotel as stated before is a reliable chain hotel. While the rooms are tight, they are affordable, clean, and always in a good location near stations. The plus is that walking to nightlife or to the station is close by.

Tennoji

A cultural hub, Tennoji is home to attractions like the Osaka Zoo, Tennoji Park, and the towering Abeno Harukas skyscraper. It’s a great area for those interested in exploring museums and green spaces.
Tennoji is a lively district that is central for tourists to see historical sites with modern attractions. It’s home to the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower, Tennoji Park, and Shitennoji Temple, as well as a large shopping complex called Abeno Harukas, which offers great views from its observation deck which I recommend.
Why stay in Tennoji?
- Visit Tennoji Park and Zoo: Explore Tennoji Park, a large urban park with walking paths, ponds, and open spaces. Within the park, you’ll find Tennoji Zoo, which houses a variety of animals from around the world. It’s a great place for families and nature enthusiasts.
- Explore Shitenno-ji Temple: Shitenno-ji is one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist temples, founded in the 6th century. The temple complex includes beautiful pagodas, gardens, and other historical structures. Take a leisurely stroll around the grounds and soak in the serene atmosphere.

Tennoji is a cheaper area for hotels so you won’t find any 5 star hotels but I recommend these three, they are all close to activities and train stations.
4 Star Hotel: Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel
Mid-range: OMO7 Osaka by Hoshino Resorts
Budget: APA Hotel Tennoji Ekimae

Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel
Marriot is connected to tennoji station which is nice because you dont have to leave any train stations to get here ex. Tokyo to Osaka. Big rooms, good location, and shopping a minute away.

OMO7 Osaka
This resort is connected to a station, pet friendly, and is right across the street from Tennoji Park and Tennoji Zoo. This is nice because it has free shuttle service to Universal Studios, 3 restaurants and 2 cafes.

APA Hotel Tennoji
As mentioned before, APA hotels are reliable so you can have the same expectations across all of its hotels in Japan. Its near the station and across the street from the huge park that includes a zoo and meusum.
Shin-Osaka

If you’re arriving by the Shinkansen (bullet train), staying near Shin-Osaka Station can be convenient. This area provides easy access to the transportation network and is a great base for day trips. This makes staying near Shin Osaka convenient since it has fast bullet trains to Kobe, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Tokyo, and more. The JR Osaka Station here is perfect for using your JR Pass.
I recommend this area if you have a large group or family because it will make carrying luggage easy. If you stay anywhere but here, you will most likely be carrying your luggage from station to station to get to different parts of the city.

Mid- Range: karaksa hotel grande Shin-Osaka

Karaksa Hotel Shin-Osaka
This high end business hotel gives you more room than standard ones. In addition, there is a convenience store located on the first floor, full amenities, and new facilities. Additionally, it is next to the Shinkansen station so it makes it easy to travel to anywhere in Japan from here.
Nakanoshima

Nestled between two rivers, Nakanoshima offers a mix of modern and historic attractions. Enjoy strolls in the parks, visit the Osaka Science Museum, and appreciate the picturesque setting.

This reasonably priced hotel is located across the street from the station, surrounded by two rivers and high rise towers that sparkle at night. The convenience here is that you are close to many museums, Nakanoshima Park (Osaka first public park) and many food options. I recommend it here if you want to avoid walking across long distances and want to have a quieter itinerary.
Osaka Castle Area

This area is ideal for those who want to stay in a quiet area with large parks, temples, shrines, gardens, and food. I think this is an area for those who want to do things at a slower pace or stay in a safe area.
You can visit Osaka Castle Park in a convenient location. There are several Osaka hotels here that have a great view of the castle. Imperial Hotel Osaka Castle is a 5-star hotel between Osaka Castle and Kita area.

Why stay in the Osaka Castle Area?
Cherry Blossom Bliss: This area is your ticket to cherry blossom heaven. For hanami (cherry blossom viewing) and night illuminations, look no further. The best spots to bask in cherry blossoms in Osaka, like Sakuranomiya Park and Osaka Castle, are right here in the Osaka Castle Area.
Kyoto at Your Fingertips: Access to Kyoto Downtown is a breeze. You can easily hop on a direct train to Gion Shijo (Higashiyama) in Kyoto. It’s less than an hour away, making a day trip to Kyoto’s cherry blossoms totally doable from Kyobashi Station.
Connect to Umeda: Don’t worry about reaching Osaka Station in Umeda. Just hop on the JR Osaka Loop Line for easy access.
Roomy and Affordable: If you’re looking for more space at a wallet-friendly price, this area has you covered. Since it’s a bit off the beaten path, hotel rooms are often larger and less expensive compared to the bustling downtown.

Bay Area

The bay Area is highly recommended for those going to Universal Studios or staying here for 2 days. If you are planning on staying here for 2-3 days with Universal studios Japan included then this is my best recommendation for your itinerary.
You have a perfect waterfront area with new buildings, theme parks, and shopping. Think about adding the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan to your itinerary since it is easily accessible by subway or Ferry! Check out my article about the aquarium in the link above. Osaka bay area is great for families.

Located right next to the port and Universal, you get the best views at this hotel. The pros include convenient location to Universal, 7-11 and lawsons outside, and spacious rooms. Monorail right outside and train station easily accessible.

Oriental Hotel Universal City
This family friendly hotel is closest to the entrance of Universal and Train station which makes carrying your bags easy to do! It has full amenities and many food options.
If you’re looking for a waterfront experience, the Bay Area is a modern district with attractions like the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, Tempozan Ferris Wheel, and Universal Studios Japan.
